Jabal Kassiun (Kassiun Mountain) rises at a dramatic pitch on the north edge of Damascus. From the top there are spectacular views of the concrete maze of architecture that is home to 4 million people. Homes and businesses have been built up the steep slope to the last possible elevation the mountain will allow. From street level the mountain is an impressive sight from everywhere in the city. I am intrigued by the women wearing the hijab (wrapped head covering framing the face); the niqab or manadeel (full covering; with only eyes visable) and the birka (full covering with veil over face). The gatherings of women, clustered together in the souks, often remind me of the mountain. |
