I am living on the northwestern fringe of Damascus in the community of Mashrua Dumar. The first week here, I was exploring, and discovered a beautiful bakery. The display cases were filled with a variety of tempting items. As I approached for a closer look... and smell... a young man asked if he could be of service. I complimented the eye and nose appeal of the café; and asked if he was the owner. He graciously acknowledged that he was. When he asked what I was doing in Syria I said, "I am an artist." He smiled and said, "My father is an artist. In fact my whole family are artists!" "Hmmm! My whole family are bakers!" I replied. We laughed and got better acquinted. This painting is of his father, Karem Hussein. |
