While walking the souks of Old Damascus Jim saw this man standing beside a shop. "He graciously allowed me to photograph him for use in future sketches/painting. In perfect English, the shop owner asked me where I was from. When he heard 'The United States,' he lowered his eyes for a moment in thought. He looked me directly in the eye and said, 'We welcome you! We do not like your government, but we welcome you.' I said, 'I have no control over my government; just as you have no control over your government. We are simply civilians.' He interpreted for the men gathered and they all smiled bobbing their heads in agreement." |
